Description:
On Monday, March 16, 2026 Moshi Co-operative University (MoCU) held strategic discussions with a delegation from Friends of Haydom, led by Board Chair Ms. Kari Kleivset from Kristiansund, Norway, aimed at strengthening collaboration in community development initiatives.
The discussions focused on enhancing partnerships in the Haydom area, particularly in relation to development activities linked to Haydom Lutheran Hospital (HLH) and the Mulbadaw Farm, a large-scale agricultural project engaged in crop production and livestock farming.
Key areas of collaboration explored included the provision of entrepreneurship education and value chain training to smallholder farmers through farmer groups and co-operative societies. The initiative is expected to contribute to improved food security and increased household incomes within the community.
The partnership also aligns with ongoing international collaboration under the NOREC Exchange Programme, funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, which facilitates knowledge exchange among professionals from Tanzania, Malawi, and Norway.
MoCU is already working with the Haydom Co-operative Society, established in 2025, which focuses on improving market access for farmers, particularly in lentil production. Through co-operative approaches, farmers are expected to enhance productivity and secure better market opportunities.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor – Academic, Research and Consultancy, Prof. John Safari, noted that the collaboration aligns with national efforts to strengthen linkages between higher learning institutions and productive sectors to support socio-economic development.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to advancing this partnership for the benefit of the Mulbadaw Farm, the Haydom community, and surrounding areas.
