Cooperatives have been identified as powerful engines of Africa’s economic and social transformation, with stakeholders urged to accelerate reforms and embrace innovation to unlock their full potential and remain resilient amid rapid global changes.

The call was made during the opening of the 6th International Conference on 2nd  September 2026 by the Guest of Honor, Dr Rose Karimi, Regional Director of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA-Africa).

Dr Karimi emphasized the need for cooperatives to adapt to changing economic realities by reforming their legal and operational systems to respond effectively to technological and economic changes. She also urged cooperatives to strengthen their resilience and embrace innovative models, including worker cooperatives and digital-based cooperatives, to attract more youth and create greater opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship.

“Challenges will always be there, including leadership and operational issues. Some are within our control, while others are beyond our control, such as climate shocks and technological changes. It is important for all cooperators, policymakers and academicians to work together in addressing these challenges and finding sustainable solutions for the cooperative sector,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor of Moshi Co-operative University (MoCU), Prof Alfred Sife, said the conference is jointly organized by MoCU and the Cooperative University of Kenya (CUK), with the two institutions taking turns to host the annual event. He said this year’s 6th International Conference is being hosted by MoCU, reflecting the institutions’ continued collaboration in advancing cooperative education, research and development.

“This conference has brought together academics, researchers, policymakers and cooperative stakeholders from different parts of the world to share knowledge and discuss emerging challenges facing the sector,” he said.

The three-day conference, being held from September 2 to 4, 2026, features 90 academic papers. Participants are expected to discuss key issues including sustainability, innovation, governance and technology.
